Designs for Living
Oct.9

WallCandy is for grown-ups, too!

On this blog, we almost exclusively talk about wall decals. But did you know there are a bunch of products – ones appealing mostly to adult tastes – that are not wall decals but different types of home décor – all in delightfully unique designs?

Oh yes, we offer a line from notNeutral that is sure to whet your decorating appetite. These room accessories are both subtle and distinctive, excellent foundations on which to build your home environments.

Take, for instance, the area rugs.  Have you ever noticed how the rug can make all the difference to any space? These spare yet friendly designs in two sizes pull the different elements of a room together.

Tired of that boring sheetrock look? Try some wood paneling! You won’t need hammer and nails, though; just a quick position-and-press application.

Most grown-ups love to pamper their guests with cool stuff. WallCandy products include ways you can set the table, with placemats and trivets, and serve your guests chips in our exquisite leaf bowl.

nullOh, and do you like the gorgeous lanterns, lighting up an outdoor deck or walkway?

After your guests have gone home, cuddle up with a few throw pillows and our reversible quilt in the living room.

If you spend more of your time in the garden than anywhere else (or at least, it seems like you do),these garden stakes will surely catch your eye.

If you thought WallCandy was all about kids, think again. It’s going to be the holiday season soon, and your kids will again take center stage. But for a little while now, consider the ways WallCandy is your resource for casually sophisticated décor all around the house, and not just in the kids’ rooms.

Whether you’re a parent interested in instilling high aesthetic values in your children, or living in an adults-only household, you’ll find these designs intriguing. Intentionally spare, they serve as launching pads for the masterpieces of your own imagination!

Donation of Wall Decals Helps Transitional Housing Facility
Oct.1

Girl Scout Makes It Happen

There’s a transitional housing and residential facility in Sylmar, CA, that helps women and children move out of homelessness and build better lives. Part of the Urban Rescue Mission (URM),which brings help and hope to homeless and desperately poor men, women, and children of downtown Los Angeles, the Hope Gardens Family Center opened in 2006, though the services it provides were first organized in the late ’90s. The URM itself was originally founded in 1893.

The Urban Rescue Mission, WallCandy Arts, and a certain Girl Scout named Joycelyn Yip teamed up to beautify rooms at the Family Center. WallCandy Arts contributed several of our wall decal kits, The URM provided the walls, and Joycelyn contributed her artistic eye and deft hands; and the results are charming, don’t you think?

Joycelyn was able to complete her Girl Scout Gold Award Project with this volunteer effort to help make the homeless women and their children at the Hope Family GardensCenter more comfortable. And she did a great job brightening the environment, which is appreciated by residents as they seek to build more positive and productive lifestyles.

Isn’t it amazing what a difference a few wall decals can make? Even if a space is institutional, or ‘transitional,’ it can be transformed from drab to delightful, from dark to cheery.

We’re proud of the Urban Rescue Mission, the Hope Garden Family Center, and especially of Joycelyn. Without her, none of these great improvements would have happened. Thank you, Joycelyn; may you go on to a glorious future!

12th Annual Super Saturday
Jul.30

August 1st Fundraiser for Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation

It’s finally here! This wonderful benefit is a sizzling summer tradition for us at WallCandyArts. Held at Nova’s Ark Project in Water Mill, New York, the event this year is hosted by Donna Karan, Areil Foxman, InStyle, Kelly Ripa, and Blake Lively.

What is Super Saturday? Just the most fabulous one-of-a-kind designer garage sale and kids’ carnival you ever experienced, along with gourmet dining and exciting activities galore. Every year, Super Saturday raises thousands of dollars for ovarian cancer research. The deals are so good, even celebrities can’t resist!

Want to know what high quality brands are represented? Checkout the star-studded list. It may be a yard sale, but we’re talking honest-to-goodness glamour here.

Super Saturday was originally the brainchild of Harper’s Bazaar editor Liz Tilberis. We quote here from the OCRF website:

On a glorious summer afternoon in the summer of 1997, Harper’s Bazaar editor Liz Tilberis and Donna Karan invited their many designer and celebrity friends to donate their clothes, shoes, handbags and jewelry for a sale on the lawn of Liz’s summer home in the Hamptons to benefit OCRF.

Liz had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer and was serving as OCRF’s president.  She was one of the first women to publicly discuss her battle with ovarian cancer, helping to bring the disease into the public consciousness.

When Liz died in April 1999, Donna Karan, Faith Kates Kogan, and their dear friends decided to continue the summer designer garage sale in theHamptons. Now in its 12th year, the event continues to raise public awareness of ovarian cancer and fund research for better treatment and, ultimately, a cure.

For her creativity and style, generosity, zest for life, and love of family, we salute Liz Tilberis.  The sense of joy, laughter, and gaiety that radiates throughout Super Saturday is a credit to her vision.

If you can’t make it to the sale, you can still participate through www.qvc.com, shopping online in the comfort of your home and spending for the benefit of cancer research. Designer items are on sale right now on the site, with more goodies available during the actual event on Saturday. And we’ll be sure to post some photos from the event ight here, so check back next week!

Removable Wall Art Helps Build Community
Jan.9

Make even a public space more inviting

You might think wall art is just for the homes of the whimsical, but using these bright enhancements is actually an important part of making any space more comfortable and inviting.  WallCandyArts products in any public space can serve to increase community pride and pleasure.

The removable wall art can make any office, school room, doctor waiting room, library, bus station, or restaurant more exciting to visit; and because it’s removable, you can change the ambiance of a space whenever you wish.

Take, for instance, the eKhaya eKasi Community Center in Khayelitsha, South Africa. Art Aids Art, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, promotes education and sustainable economic development through the arts.   Founded in 2003 by educators and human service professionals, Art Aids Art serves women and children through programs in impoverished townships surrounding Cape Town, South Africa.  The eKhaya eKasi Community Center is one of their projects.

one (200 x 134)

two (200 x 134)

WallCandyArts teamed up with Art Aids Art to help realize the dream of this community center, which will serve as a “Home in the ‘Hood” for hundreds of women and children.  The center will provide early childhood teacher education, and nutrition, health and HIV/AIDS counseling.  Four microbusinesses will operate out of eKhaya eKasi: an art boutique, beauty salon and eatery on the ground floor, and a two-room bed & breakfast catering to the booming “township tourism” industry on the second floor.

After three years in the making, the much-anticipated facility held its Grand Opening on December 1, 2008, coinciding with World Aids Day.

Attended by a large crowd of eager participants, the community center’s opening was a happy and proud occasion.  After the ribbon cutting, celebrations proceeded with dancing, refreshments, art experiences, and a t-shirt raffle with ten winners.

So how do you take a used metal refuse container, donated materials, and an impoverished neighborhood and create a welcoming, attractive space?  It requires the hard work and devotion of a group like Art Aids Art, along with their savvy in enlisting the partnership of such innovative products as WallCandyArts.  Together, these enterprises were able to transform this

into this!

Do you know of a public space that could use some brightening up?  Removable wall art can work wonders.  Check out WallCandyArts latest offerings, and use this simple, quick way to uplift everyone’s spirits!

Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Oct.19

breastcancerhead
“It’s hard to remember how long ago Isabel Herrera died of breast cancer because in so many ways she is still here for me and for the many friends, clients, and colleagues who are connected to her. She was so generous with her ideas, her possessions, her time, and in sharing her friends with each other so that today we remain friends of Isabel. Her spirit is ever-present,through Isabel’s love for us we each came to love ourselves a little more.”

-

This is a quote from my mother who lost her best friend to breast cancer a few years ago. In honor of national breast cancer awareness month we are offering a 25% discount coupon in exchange for your minimum donation of 10 dollars to The Gilda’s Club New York City, a place where Isabel and many other cancer patients receive great support just when they really need it.
