12th Annual Super Saturday
Jul.30

August 1st Fundraiser for Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation

It’s finally here! This wonderful benefit is a sizzling summer tradition for us at WallCandyArts. Held at Nova’s Ark Project in Water Mill, New York, the event this year is hosted by Donna Karan, Areil Foxman, InStyle, Kelly Ripa, and Blake Lively.

What is Super Saturday? Just the most fabulous one-of-a-kind designer garage sale and kids’ carnival you ever experienced, along with gourmet dining and exciting activities galore. Every year, Super Saturday raises thousands of dollars for ovarian cancer research. The deals are so good, even celebrities can’t resist!

Want to know what high quality brands are represented? Checkout the star-studded list. It may be a yard sale, but we’re talking honest-to-goodness glamour here.

Super Saturday was originally the brainchild of Harper’s Bazaar editor Liz Tilberis. We quote here from the OCRF website:

On a glorious summer afternoon in the summer of 1997, Harper’s Bazaar editor Liz Tilberis and Donna Karan invited their many designer and celebrity friends to donate their clothes, shoes, handbags and jewelry for a sale on the lawn of Liz’s summer home in the Hamptons to benefit OCRF.

Liz had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer and was serving as OCRF’s president.  She was one of the first women to publicly discuss her battle with ovarian cancer, helping to bring the disease into the public consciousness.

When Liz died in April 1999, Donna Karan, Faith Kates Kogan, and their dear friends decided to continue the summer designer garage sale in theHamptons. Now in its 12th year, the event continues to raise public awareness of ovarian cancer and fund research for better treatment and, ultimately, a cure.

For her creativity and style, generosity, zest for life, and love of family, we salute Liz Tilberis.  The sense of joy, laughter, and gaiety that radiates throughout Super Saturday is a credit to her vision.

If you can’t make it to the sale, you can still participate through www.qvc.com, shopping online in the comfort of your home and spending for the benefit of cancer research. Designer items are on sale right now on the site, with more goodies available during the actual event on Saturday. And we’ll be sure to post some photos from the event ight here, so check back next week!

New WallCandy Smarts Design!
Jul.20

We’re introducing a brand new WallCandy product. Each time we launch a new item, it reminds us of giving birth. At least, it’s almost as exciting!

After all, those brand new bundles of joy are what make the world go round, isn’t it true? That’s why this particular new set of non-toxic, removable wall decals is really special. It’sdesigned for newborns!

You may have heard about the research that’s been done on infant responses to certain shapes andcolors. They like repetitive geometric shapes, like checkerboards and targets. It seems they’re very happy with these in simple black-and-white, though they also soon come to love primary colors. And another thing your brand new baby loves is looking at people’s faces.

Well, the marriage of two great minds has now created a WallCandyArts product that you can stick on the wall near the baby’s changing table, crib, or bouncy seat. They’re customized for your baby’s eyes …and imagination!

It was when Danielle Gutherie and the Vega Project in San Francisco, experimented with some illustrations for her own very young children that she realized just how delighted they were by certain colors and shapes. She shared her discoveries with us at WallCandy, we got together on finalizing the designs, and now we’re so happy to share with you!

By the way, we did work with pediatricians in the development of these decals – all of whom roundly approved them for stimulating newborn brain activity. Dr. Charles Barsam, M.D., a prominent ophthalmologist, writes, “Images similar to those found in WallCandy Smarts have been scientifically demonstrated to capture a child’s attention and promote visual growth. Exposure to such images is important in developing a child’s best visual potential, whereas deprivation of such stimuli has been shown to be detrimental to a child’s development.”

Now, check this out. These are cool little designs in their own right, but there’s more.

1. When your child is fresh from the delivery room, you can use just the black and white stickers from your set.

2. As she puts on a couple months of age, you can add in some of the colored decals.

3. And then, before she exits infancy for a more mobile lifestyle, you can use the included frames (there are 6 in each set!) to put up pictures of your family along with the other shapes.

So your Smartsdisplay can change and grow with your baby, becoming more elaborate and personalized as her first year progresses.

Want a smart baby? Need a smart decorating solution? Think a picture that’s smart enough to change with time would entertain your new little family member? Get smart, and check out this new line!

Basics of Design: Light, Color, and Shape
Jul.10

Let the room reveal its charm!

You just moved in to your new home, and you’re absolutely thrilled at the prospect ofdesigning from scratch. This time, you’re going to do interior decoration that’s perfectly suited to you.

Looking at the empty rooms, though, you wonder where to start. The possibilities seem endless. You leaf through stacks of home décor magazines, and view your friends’ homes with a new perspective, identifying brilliant solutions and mentally filing them. You’re going to take your time with this, and do it right.

As you begin the job, you realize you can start from the rock bottom basics of light, color, and shape. Take the living room, for instance. It’s rectangular, with windows on two sides. The first thing you want to do is celebrate those windows, and let their light flow as freely as possible throughout the room.

On the other hand, you’d like some privacy in the evenings, so some kind of drapery is required.Armed with the twin criteria of maximum light matched with the capability draw the blinds, you find roll-up bamboo shades that do both tricks nicely.

This one solution then suggests several more. Wondering what color to paint the walls, you take your cue from the color of the shades, combined with the tones of daylight as it spills on the floor. Working both up and down the color spectrum from this base, you begin to get a good idea of the room’s color scheme.

You use color swatches for paints and fabrics, obtained free or on loan from paint and furniture stores, playing endlessly with the combinations. But you realize that you needn’t pour over them much longer, because you know what you like, and the right colors just seem to jump out at you. Often, your knee-jerk responses are the most reliable.

To boost the room’s lightness, you paint the walls a lighter color than the shades. You choose a rug that’s just slightly darker. And then, still captivated by the dominance of light, you decide that your furniture will be in neutral tones and simple patterns, with accents of very strong, bright colors.

But what kind of furniture? The choices of shapes in couches, tables, and armchairs are infinite. Again, you take your cue from the room itself. You’d like to break up the boxy feeling of the rectangular space, so you select a more rounded shape for the sofa, and set it in the middle of the room, rather than along the wall.

Continuing the open and airy feeling first established by your choice of window shades, you select additional pieces of furniture that give a very light, though comfortable impression. The larger pieces repeat the roundedness and neutral color of the couch, while end tables and lamps may be more fanciful and brightly colored.

So the important thing, when creating a new interior design, is to start with the space itself, and work from there. Don’t make the mistake of going shopping before you determine what the room calls for. Use the simple considerations of light, color, and shape, and the image of your perfect room will come together magically!
