Decorating Sasha's Room at the White House

Sasha’s Room

Part One of Two on Malia and Sasha’s Redecorating Choices

Sasha_Obama_1.JPG

Are we having a blast with our new First Children or what?  Malia and Sasha Obama exhibit undeniable charm and they add a good deal to the new president’s hopeful message.  Since they’ve just moved into their new home, and their new personal bedrooms, it’s fun to imagine how they could redecorate to make their rooms a comfy refuge.

Though somewhat luxurious and fun to be celebrated, surely being the daughter of an American President can be stressful.  You have to be near perfect in public, whether you feel like it or not.  So your own room needs to provide a good balance to that public life, allowing you to fully relax in private.

The importance of privacy protection for Malia and Sasha has been underscored by their father’s decision to disallow further interviews with them after one that took place last July.  So we don’t know many details of these young ladies’ lives.  But that sort of makes it all the more fun to speculate!

Next post we’ll look at Malia’s room, and for now let’s consider how young seven year-old Sasha might like her personal space to be decorated.

Sasha seems like so many young girls recently who have chosen pink as the color du jour, every jour.  Her Inauguration Ceremony outfit combined bright pink with bright orange, making both colors more luscious and delightful.

So perhaps she’d like this wild combo of colors in her room, as well.  If you were Michelle Obama, what would be your response?

How about, ‘Go for it, girl!’

Let’s hang orange, pink, and white striped curtains on those big windows, and lay a huge fluffy rug with an orange and pink striped tiger on it next to your bed.  Oh, and on your bed, let’s have a billowy pale pink comforter, and bright pink sheets.

By now the reader may be thinking that this is a potentially sickening amount of pink.  Don’t forget that Sasha really loves it.  But knowing that her tastes will be evolving, and seeking to make the space a little less – what is the word, noisy? – let’s put in a bunch of touches that are shades of yellow.  Perhaps some shelves, a work/play table and chair, a mirror or dresser.

Why not touches of green?  That would be the more normal choice to counteract the pinks.  But Sasha’s famous flamboyance requires that we still keep a bit of an edge to things.  The yellow relieves the eye, but it’s still fun, while green would just be calming.  Remember, this is a wild and crazy little girl’s room!

About the shelves:  Sasha herself should have a major vote in all these decorating decisions, of course, but especially when it comes to shelves.  A person needs their shelves where they need their shelves, and nowhere else.  Don’t let adult personal aesthetics dictate this one, and you’ll end up with an organized kid.

Also don’t forget that at seven years old, Sasha is moving towards progressively more computer use, not to mention seriousness in school.  Her bedroom’s privatework station should be an inviting nook.  Let’s put some of her artwork, a toy or two, and maybe some favorite photos there, along with the technology.

Finally, may we suggest some WallCandyArts stickers.  The walls of this hypothetical room we’ve decorated with Sasha are an ivory color (better to offset the bright furnishings) and in a few places they beg for some fun.

Now Sasha’s a storyteller, we’ll presume from her expressive nature, so playing with wall stickers is a great outlet for the tales she spins. She can make an indoor  butterfly garden with FlutterfliesSeason Elements and Tulips. Candy Factory,SeasonsDeerly Beloved, and Dottilicious all offer endless possibilities for stories and fantasy lands.

The inspiration provided by an important leader can be awesome, and in this case, Barack Obama’s family is a big value-add.  Look how fun it is to think of our new President’s youngest being creative as she decorates her own new space.  Colors, choices, perhaps compromises with Mom and Dad; it’s so energizing to create your own space.

Not all of us may have the splendor of a White House to work with, but whatever the place, you can make it your own with the right colors and a bold approach.  What bedrooms have you transformed to perfection for yourself?

Wall Stickers for Kids
Jan.16

You’ve probably seen the larger-than-life wall stickers of football giants or other celebrities (military tanks, superheros, roaring lions – there’s a host of them) that you can buy to slap up on your TV room wall.  Grown-ups these days are rediscovering a primal pleasure that kids already know well.

For some reason, stickers hold endless fascination for just about anybody.  Kids, especially, are huge sticker fans.

And when they’re wall stickers, well, it’s the best of all.

A picture that just sticks wherever you put it is way cool in the first place.  And decorating the walls is a time-honored kids’ pastime, right?  How many of us were caught scribbling on those forbidden surfaces?  Having walls we can paint or decorate however we wish is one of the first great liberations when kids finally leave home.  That’s why college dorm rooms are, well, shall we say, very expressive.

As you know, WallCandy Arts has wall stickers that appeal to different ages as your child grows up.  From designs that delight infants to those beloved by toddlers to other, more mature designs for young children, these stickers are no muss, no fuss toys and companions that young people treasure.

Now here’s the really awesome part.

You might think that stickers don’t exercise a child’s imagination very much.  Seems there’s not much more to it than sticking them here, sticking them there.
You might think it’s all just for fun, but using wall stickers can actually be a way to encourage your child’s thinking processes.

Stickers for kids are almost like Lego’s or paper dolls, remember them?  They were beloved because you could use the various parts to make your own arrangement.  Any toy that allows us to use our own imagination and make our own creations quickly becomes a favorite.

Stickers for kids are like that.  You have a bunch of them, and you put them together in your own unique way.  And then you disassemble what you’ve made and go through the process again, just because.

WallCandyArts products are created to provide these developmental advantages.  Our designs are artfully simple, and they bring out the creative in you!  The wall stickers from WallCandyArts invite you to play with them, finding your own special expression, creating one-of-a-kind designs in your child’s room.  Here are some examples of wonderful decorating by families very much like yours.

But wait, there’s more!  Is your child starting school, or older?  WallCandyArtschalkboard stickers let your kids actually write on the wall!  There just isn’t much that’s cooler – or more conducive to your child’s analytical and imaginative growth – than that.

And parents, it’s all without making a mess.

Want to give your kid a clean, safe, and stimulating environment – one they can rearrange to their hearts’ content without causing you grief?  Wall stickers for kids are a great option!

Removable Wall Art Helps Build Community

Make even a public space more inviting

You might think wall art is just for the homes of the whimsical, but using these bright enhancements is actually an important part of making any space more comfortable and inviting.  WallCandyArts products in any public space can serve to increase community pride and pleasure.

The removable wall art can make any office, school room, doctor waiting room, library, bus station, or restaurant more exciting to visit; and because it’s removable, you can change the ambiance of a space whenever you wish.

Take, for instance, the eKhaya eKasi Community Center in Khayelitsha, South Africa. Art Aids Art, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, promotes education and sustainable economic development through the arts.   Founded in 2003 by educators and human service professionals, Art Aids Art serves women and children through programs in impoverished townships surrounding Cape Town, South Africa.  The eKhaya eKasi Community Center is one of their projects.

two (200 x 134)

WallCandyArts teamed up with Art Aids Art to help realize the dream of this community center, which will serve as a “Home in the ‘Hood” for hundreds of women and children.  The center will provide early childhood teacher education, and nutrition, health and HIV/AIDS counseling.  Four microbusinesses will operate out of eKhaya eKasi: an art boutique, beauty salon and eatery on the ground floor, and a two-room bed & breakfast catering to the booming “township tourism” industry on the second floor.

After three years in the making, the much-anticipated facility held its Grand Opening on December 1, 2008, coinciding with World Aids Day.

Attended by a large crowd of eager participants, the community center’s opening was a happy and proud occasion.  After the ribbon cutting, celebrations proceeded with dancing, refreshments, art experiences, and a t-shirt raffle with ten winners.

So how do you take a used metal refuse container, donated materials, and an impoverished neighborhood and create a welcoming, attractive space?  It requires the hard work and devotion of a group like Art Aids Art, along with their savvy in enlisting the partnership of such innovative products as WallCandyArts.  Together, these enterprises were able to transform this

into this!

Do you know of a public space that could use some brightening up?  Removable wall art can work wonders.  Check out WallCandyArts latest offerings, and use this simple, quick way to uplift everyone’s spirits!
